David Richardson also called on companies to make sure they are doing everything possible to minimize the risk of Covid-19.

Relief ‘RIPPLES’ among businesses in the Highlands will be felt after today’s Scottish government announcement on vaccine passport requirements.

This is the view of the Highland and Island Development Director of the Federation of Small Businesses, David Richardson, following what Prime Minister Nicola Sturgeon announced today.

The Scottish government will not extend vaccination passport requirements to a wider range of businesses, although various restrictions will remain in place in what she called a ‘precarious’ situation.

David Richardson, said: “Waves of relief will be sweeping through the many small independent hotel and leisure businesses in the Highlands at this news.

“We know from our investigative work how badly the owners of some of the businesses hit hardest by the pandemic – small cafes, restaurants and so on. their plans for the holiday season.

“However, the Prime Minister is clearly right – citizens, government and businesses of all sizes have a role to play in keeping this virus under control, which is why we are urging all small businesses to reconsider current Covid rules. and whether they are fully playing their role.

Ms Sturgeon has previously called on people who socialize over the holiday season to take lateral flow tests, especially those who haven’t been vaccinated and who she says could “put lives at risk.”

Ms Sturgeon says people were already being asked to do this routinely twice a week, but during the holiday season to “go the extra mile.”

Working from home, while not ideal for many, should remain the norm wherever possible as it “remains one of the most effective protections” against Covid.

Ms Sturgeon said: “I can confirm that the judgment we came to this morning is this: First, for at least three more weeks, we will maintain vaccine certification for the sites and events currently covered by the program. that is, Late night license premises with a designated area for dancing at seated indoor events of 500 people or more Outdoor events of 4,000 people or more and any event of 10,000 people or more.

“Given the current state of the pandemic, we believe it would not be appropriate at this stage to remove this protection against transmission.

“Second, however, we have decided that from December 6 it will be possible to access the sites or events covered by the program by showing either proof of vaccination as currently or a recent result of a lateral flow test. negative, so we will also ensure that the scheme remains proportionate going forward and also contributes to our broader efforts to stop transmission, through greater use of LFD testing more generally.

“And finally, as I indicated last week, after also considering the possible extension of the program to a much wider range. This included indoor theaters and other hospitality venues. stress that this was a very, very finely balanced decision, however, I can confirm that at this stage we have decided not to extend the scope of the scheme.

“We have taken into account the fact that although our situation is precarious, rates are currently stable and even falling slightly.”

Regarding the more general approach going forward, Ms Sturgeon said, “So when you see these advertisements, please take a moment to listen and remind yourself of the protections that will help you protect yourself and others. What are these other protections?

“First of all, as well as the vaccination. We ask everyone to have a regular lateral flow test. We have asked people to do it routinely twice a week.

“However, during the holiday season. We ask for extra effort. And so this next request is vitally important – whenever you socialize with others, whether it’s going out for a drink or dinner, to visit. to someone at home or even going shopping somewhere, which might be crowded, please do an LFD test before you go, and if positive, don’t go. Instead, take a PC test and isolate yourself while you wait for the result.

“Please continue to wear face coverings on public transport, in shops and when traveling to hospitality establishments. This remains a legal obligation but it is also a vital protection. A study published last week, suggested that face coverings can reduce the risk of transmission by more than 50 percent.

Rangers have confirmed that no fans will be denied entry to the game against Hibernian on Sunday.

A botched roll-out of the app required to show vaccine passports and a poor general preparation period until the launch date today has resulted in an embarrassing ludicrous situation for the Scottish Government.

They had announced a “grace period” of about two weeks for the implementation of the plans, which was a catalyst for confusion among the public.

Earlier today, Aberdeen FC announced they would not implement the guidelines and now Rangers have followed suit.

The Ibrox club released a short statement ahead of the clash with Hibs that read:

“After further engagement with the Scottish Government we can confirm that although we are encouraged to use this game as a ‘test event’ no supporters will be refused entry.”

“We apologize for the inconvenience caused by this confusion which was beyond our control. “

Goal

Many fans will see this as a common sense victory while some will point out that there is actually nothing to chance.

Proving two vaccinations doesn’t mean a person doesn’t have the virus, so what is it? This remains to be fully explained.

Spot checks were due to be carried out in what would have been a ‘trial’ at Ibrox on Sunday, but now no fans will be turned away, further highlighting the mess that was created by the Scottish government rushing through the entire operation before it’s ready.

As reported by BBC Scotland, Health Minister Humza Yousaf said:

“Overall the issues are due to the volume of traffic, but what I would say if you’re having any persistent issues, don’t hesitate to call the Covid helpline. ”

Like the new vaccination requirements for live events in Australia, sports teams and venues in Seattle have announced vaccination and testing requirements to attend the events.

The new Climate Pledge Arena has joined with the Seattle Seahawks, Mariners, Sounders and Kraken in demanding proof of vaccination or a recent negative test on entry for all people aged 12 and over.

Several announcements have been made to give fans plenty of time to get their shots before upcoming events in October.

Mandatory masks will also be in place for people over the age of 5, in alliance with state and federal health guidelines for events of more than 500 people.

Seattle Marines Senior Vice President Trevor Gooby said, “The evidence is clear: vaccination is safe and effective in preventing serious illness from COVID-19.

The Climate Pledge and the Kraken Arena have made a statement saying that event attendees will be able to show proof of vaccination using their smartphones.

The construction of the site incorporated air circulation systems filtering the outside air and contactless features such as contactless ticketing and food and beverage transactions.

Oak View Group Senior Vice President Don Graham added, “Throughout the construction process, we followed the advice of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), the American Society of Heating, Refrigerating and Air-Conditioning Engineers (ASHRAE) and other health authorities to identify effective solutions, not just for today but for years to come, ”Graham said.

Seahawks president Chuck Arnold explained, saying, “These steps will allow us to continue our plans to host a full stadium experience for our guests,” he said.

“We urge all eligible people to get vaccinated.

The CDC has defined full vaccination as two weeks after the second dose of Pfizer or Moderna vaccines or the single dose of Johnson & Johnson vaccine.

Other university athletics departments such as the University of Washington and Washington State University have also announced vaccination requirements for the games, including proof of vaccination or a negative COVID-19 test.

Neil Brown, Managing Director of Falkirk Community Trust, said: “We are sorry to have to share this news, but I am sure those who have been looking forward to attending this event will understand this decision.

“We must continue to reduce the level of transmission of the virus and do everything possible to prevent its spread. “

Sault Ste. Marie Chamber of Commerce does its part to help its members understand government policy and the role they need to play in keeping their businesses, employees and customers safe. A webinar was conducted by the chamber last week to address the initial release of the information and another is expected in the near future as details materialize.

By the middle of next week, Ontarians will have to prove they are double vaccinated in order to access restaurants, gyms, sporting events and concerts.

They will do this by printing their second dose vaccination receipt on the government website until an “enhanced” certificate and smartphone app are available on October 22.

Employees in industries who must have proof of vaccination will be asked to enforce the rules.

Rory Ring, CEO of Sault Ste. Marie Chamber of Commerce said the Ontario government has targeted high-risk environments that often create higher gatherings and no masking in their quest to keep people safe.

“Indoor dining rooms, gyms and bars are areas where a spread can easily exist,” he said.

It is on this premise that the Ontario government decided to implement a proof of vaccination policy to prevent the spread of COVID-19 and, ultimately, to prevent further containment.

“This is really the underlying principle behind it. The delta variant can wreak havoc in the healthcare system and science shows that unvaccinated people are 42 times more likely to end up in an intensive care unit, ”he said.

Ring said the Chamber of Commerce is doing its part to help its members understand government policy and the role they need to play in keeping their businesses, employees and customers safe. A webinar was conducted by the chamber last week to address the initial release of the information and another is expected in the near future as details materialize.

“Some people have suggested that a regional approach would be more appropriate, especially in Algoma, for example, where the intensity of positive cases has been very low. But, we have to consider that there is still displacement in Ontario and the province recognizes that this could spread the virus, ”he said.

APH has published tools and FAQs on its website to help companies understand the concept and implement their own internal policies.

The health unit has developed a Vaccine Policing Toolkit for Workplaces in Algoma that outlines the basic information and resources businesses need to design a COVID-19 vaccination policy and strengthen confidence in vaccination.

The toolkit explains the role of employers and the workplace benefits of immunization promotion, summarizes provincial guidelines, and offers tools for identifying risks, tracking vaccine information, and providing guidance to employers, among others. others.

Ring said chamber members had mixed feelings about the passport system. Some are hesitant about the burden this will place on their businesses and others do not agree with the policy at all.

“It may be an additional challenge for companies to manage this policy, especially for an industry that has already experienced a lot of difficulties during the pandemic,” he said. “They really need to know and understand how to implement the policy for the employees and what challenges it will create.”

For example, Ring said there was a fear that confrontations between customers and employees could occur if an individual is denied entry to a premises because proof of vaccination is not available.

“Individuals will have to recognize that they still have a choice. We cannot force vaccines on individuals, but people always have the choice to eat on the patio or take out if they have chosen not to be vaccinated, ”he said.

Ring said he hopes the community treats businesses and their employees with respect.

“We just hope that everyone, regardless of their perspective, will be courteous to our business owners and their employees and will not engage in behavior that may be viewed as intimidating or potentially dangerous,” he said. he declares.

The Town of Williams Lake has changed its rules regarding spectators at the Cariboo Memorial Recreation Complex.

The city’s CAO, Gary Muraca, said those under 50 spectators will not need proof of vaccination to enter the complex, which he said complies with current provincial health ordinances.

“We are going to demand what the province needs,” Muraca said on Tuesday. “We’re not going over that.”

The city made an announcement on Monday (September 13) stating that adults over 22 would be required to produce vaccine passports in order to watch indoor youth sports.

Muraca said the city’s earlier decision was based on a communication from the BC Recreation and Parks Association (BCRPA) which provides information and guidance to local governments that own and operate indoor recreation facilities.

Contacted Tuesday, BCRPA CEO Rebecca Tunnacliffe said the association was seeking confirmation of the rules surrounding spectators.

“The issue of spectator immunization status is not resolved and we continue to seek clarification from the SPO,” Tunnacliffe told the Tribune in a response sent by email.

In an interview Monday night, Williams Lake Minor Hockey Association president Mike Rispin said he already had parents calling to remove their children from hockey with news of a passport vaccination requirement for the viewers.

“Youth sports in this city cannot lose their participation,” said Rispin. “As we lose members, we lose money and the ability to run good programs. “

On Tuesday afternoon, Rispin welcomed the news that spectators under the age of 50 can attend indoor youth sports without proof of vaccination.

“I’m happy. I wish we hadn’t had anything to do with all of this, but I’m glad we were able to find a compromise.

Rispin reminded all participants and spectators to treat those who must volunteer and work under these requirements with the utmost respect.

“After the day is over, it’s all about the kids on the ice.”
