Dual Maltese living in the UK no longer face problems renewing their Maltese passports, Foreign Minister Evarist Bartolo told Parliament on Monday in response to a question from Nationalist MP Edwin Vassallo .

According to Vassallo, the Malta High Commission in London refused to renew their Maltese passports.

The Minister replied that currently Maltese citizens residing in the United Kingdom can renew their passports at the High Commission, whether or not they are entitled to dual nationality.

During the national Covid-19 lockdown imposed by the UK government, the High Commission offered limited services to people with a valid alternative travel document, such as those with dual nationality, making room for people whose only document trip had expired, he explained.

This meant, Bartolo continued, that these people could apply for the renewal of their Maltese passports and the EU settlement program, which required a valid ID. However, this was only the case from December 2020 to June 2021, as anyone with single or dual nationality can now renew their passport at the high commission, the minister noted.
